Sophie McComas-Williams

Name: Sophie McComas-Williams

Occupation: I’m the co-founder of a 10-year-old creative agency called Buffet, which leads creative content projects within the food, drink and hotel industries. I also have a bunch of side-quests including a food/fashion/culture/beauty/travel Substack called Highly Enthused.

Place of Childhood: Sydney, Australia

Place of Residence: Sydney, Australia

Place of Sanctuary: Can I say Hydra Island, off the coast of Athens? I constantly mine its local real estate websites just in case a cheap shack comes up.

LOVE

Early mornings or late nights? Honestly I’m not good at achieving either. I need an embarrassing amount of sleep that really makes me question my health! But it’s always been this way so I'm learning to embrace that my peak is something like… 11am.

What is most loveable about you? I asked a best friend to answer this for me and she said; “Your endless enthusiasm and curiosity. You’re a champion for the people you love, parties are more fun when you’re there, things get done because you’re there, your brain is full of ideas and you know how to turn ideas into REALITY. You’re fearless and determined and you really give a shit! If you think I can do something then I feel like I can do it.” I hope it’s true!

Tell us a moment of heart ache? I find watching those I love struggle with tough circumstances outside their control very difficult. I want to just swoop in to fix and smooth everything.

LIFE

How do you take your coffee? There is a certain unbridled joy that chocolate sprinkled on top of foam brings. Anyone who rejects the perfection that is the cappuccino is trying too fucking hard to be cool. My nutritionist told me to add a scoop of collagen so I'm trialling that at the moment like a dutiful little student.

A game-changing purchase you made? Buying our home, going over budget by reimagining its interior and jack-hammering up the concrete in the backyard in order to create a garden have all been extremely costly but extremely satisfying financial decisions. They’ve each brought our family so much deep happiness.

What have you known for a long time? That people may ask for advice, say they agree and will follow it, but in the end they will do exactly what they want, and were probably always going to do. This includes myself of course.

OTHER

Most unforgettable dish? Food is quite literally the focus of my career path, special interest, hobby, family business and obsession so this is hard. But my husband made me a mud crab curry on one of our early dates and I’ve never forgotten it (and he’s never made it again since, hint hint).

What makes you uncomfortable? Indirectness, or vagueness. I thrive on direct communication, forward momentum and clear decision making and if neither of those are present I can freak. I’m working on the freak part.

What is under-rated? Trying hard and failing. Most people never even try.
